Highlands Accessory Dwelling Unit
Our design expanded an existing 1 car garage and provided a new Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) structure located behind. We created a modern open living space to work with the simple midcentury ranch home in the Highlands neighborhood in Denver. Our goal was to create a one story structure that worked with the rear garden space and landscape. We also created an art studio workshop space in a shipping container, which given the slope of the site neatly tucked under the existing deck for the main house. The design creates a lofted fun space for teens and a modern glass filled living space that blends indoors and outdoors. We also carefully crafted window locations to preserve privacy to the alley and yet still capture natural light. The structure has a super large overhang protecting the patio space and large doors to create a protected garden space that extends the living space outward under a magical tree.
